Michael E. Mann, distinguished professor of atmospheric science at Penn State University, completed research with Stefan Rahmstorf, Kai Kornhuber and Dim Coumou to demonstrate a direct link between climate change and a large family of extreme recent weather events.

The researchers looked at historical atmospheric observations and nearly 50 climate models to discover how these large-scale climate events evolve over time. They are now able to connect human-caused global warming to an array of extreme recent weather events.

Also working on this project was Sonya K. Miller, programmer analyst at Penn State; and Byron A. Steinman, assistant professor from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Large Lakes Observatory in the University of Minnesota: Duluth.
